Ciao Margotbean!
I remember discussing this topic months ago but we didn't end up with a good solution.
I think a better option maybe would be "Carovana". Usually we use this word referring to the Wild West caravans but I think it would be another option to what we have now.

::"Carovana in viaggio" gives more the idea of something that isn't always there but it doesn't sound very good in Italian. Since it's something where you can buy stuff maybe we can say "Carovana del Mercante", it's more understandable this way because merchants are travelling a lot, no?
